Riding Lights Roughshod - Amble Base

8th - 22nd May 2011

Recently several places in Alnwick Deanery were energised by the visit of the young touring theatre company 'Roughshod', part of the York-based Riding Lights Christian theatre.

Five young professional actors, Helen, George, Phoebe, Naomi and Peter were based in St. Cuthbert's, Amble for 2 weeks and performed their incredibly lively, life-giving and thought-provoking sketch show in schools, prisons and churches.

They gave adult and junior drama workshops and also 5 very well attended public performances: at Rothbury, Alnwick, Embleton, Felton and Amble.  The sketches didn't just entertain us, they made us think and they made us laugh and cry.  The five actors weave their own stories of faith into the sketches, and some of these are very moving.

Many of the people who came were on the fringes of the churches or not churchgoers at all, so this is a very accessible way of getting a gospel message out into the community.

We had an amazing 2 weeks with the Roughshod team here in Amble.

The Riding Lights Roughshod Theatre Company presented five public performances of their sketch show "DOWNSIDEUP", ran two drama workshops, performed at two church services, ran workshops in seven schools and performed in two prisons.

Thanks guys for all your fun and hard work.

Roughshod performed for us here at St Cuthbert's during our Sunday morning worship.

Afterwards they joined us all for coffee and parishioners enjoyed the opportunity for a chat with them.

Roughshod performed five live shows of their production...

'DOWNSIDEUP'.

We were worried at first by the slow start to the ticket sales in Amble for 'DOWNSIDEUP' , so a human billboard was employed to walk the streets.

We need not have worried though as the audience was amazing and on the night we had over 120 people to the show..

Thanks must go to everyone who came to support Roughshod.

ICE CREAM ANYONE?

Diane had the great idea to sell ice creams in the interval.

She would not have been complete without her own ice cream bill board.

Peter manned the Riding Lights merchandise table during the interval. Our audience was able to find out more about this theatre company.

This was a well-shaken range of stories and sketches, comedy and music, which give a very different perspective on the powerful pressures of modern living.

THE PUNCHY NEW SKETCH SHOW FOR 2011

Take a look from another angle… because real life doesn’t always make sense!  Is keeping up wearing you down?  Are you pulling the strings or accepting your lot?  In control or out of it?

Grasping the high-voltage issue of Power firmly by the flex and turning it topsy-turvy and inside out, five multi-talented young performers give remarkable accounts of themselves and others - people who have discovered unusual ways to connect their negatives to positives.  Sparks fly when the power to change, to transform ‘the impossible’, comes from an unexpected source.

Riding Lights Roughshod are well-known for taking their unique brand of high energy theatre with a spiritual edge to all kinds of places where live theatre is rare but greatly enjoyed. Young people and the young at heart, come together to chuckle and cheer and generally get things into a more eternal perspective. So, if you're looking for something illuminating, funny and uplifting to light up all kinds of people in your community, get your cart before your horse, put your back foot forwards and plug in to this sparky, sparkling show. It’ll do you a power of good!

A highly-charged, head over heels, roller-coaster ride of wit, wisdom and wonder, DOWNSIDEUP turned things around for the people of Amble.

Thanks again guys.
